Krisiun: Southern storm

26/06/08  ||  Lord K Philipson

These 3 brothers are the fucken epitome of hard work and death metal. I had the privilege to tour with the mighty Brazilians of Krisiun as the live guitarist for Grave in 2007. I also had the privilege to watch these guys perform about 30 times on that tour. They never let me down. Not off stage, not on stage. Excellent people in all areas. Krisiun is a fucken force, a thunderous one too, on stage. The brutality and precision these guys possess is remarkable. Off stage they are very down to earth, quite mellow and very friendly and outgoing. Simply among the coolest people I ever had the pleasure of meeting in this business. And I have met them all.

I used to be a huge fucken Krisiun fan, that was when I got to hear “Conquerors of armageddon” tons of years back. The “Ravager” track still give me the willies and is considered one of the finest moments in Krisiun’s career, for me. I never got to hear that tune on the tour though I almost begged for it. Not that it has much to do with anything since this is a review supposed to deal with the latest effort, “Southern storm”, but nonetheless it made for a good enough intro.

Krisiun kinda lost me with the hideous production on “Ageless venomous” and I can’t say I’m all that familiar with “AssassiNation” nor “Works of carnage”, I don’t really know why since I still consider myself a fan of this band. I guess I think that Krisiun peaked with “Conquerors” and thanx to “Ageless venomous” (though it has some great tunes) my craving for Krisiun stopped, came to a halt. Until now, coz “Southern storm” is a fucken terrific display of murderous death metal, the way only Krisiun do it. From the get-go we are blessed with punch after punch in the scrotum by these savages. “Slaying steel” opens up a bit unexpected until the trademark blasts steps in and all is returned to order in Krisiun country. It just caught me that I have to give “Works of carnage” and “AssassiNation” new spins before the day is over. Those albums have prolly just been waiting for me to devour them again.

There’s no way you can mistake Krisiun for any other death metal band. The incredibly skilled guitarist Moyses really shines with his performance here (well, he always did. I have seen this guy warm up before a gig and he pulls off the most insane shit you necessarily can’t hear in Krisiun’s music), laying down one annihilating riff after the other, spicing it up with really neat solos. Moyses is one underrated axeman (just listen to the acoustic piece “Black wind”), that’s for sure. Alex’ grunts are top notch as always, neatly accompanied by a quite audible bass and the drums by blaster-master Max.

Krisiun are not doing anything different this time around with “Southern storm”, and I don’t think anyone thought they would. They live and breathe death metal and there’s no way we will see these bastards pull a “Cryptopsy” on us any time soon, and I’m fucken happy for that coz the world really needs a consistent death metal band like these guys. Thanx for bringing back my interest in everything released after “Conquerors”.

If Alex reads this: It’s not only orange juice in that cup, huh?

8/10.
